Natural wood floors:
For best results, product and room temperature during application should be between 60° – 70° F (15.5° – 21.1°C). Wear a NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator to protect from organic vapors when applying Glitsa Gold Seal Stains. Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when handling stains.
Stir stain well, being sure to mix in all ingredients from the bottom of the container. For pigmented stains best results can be achieved by using a paddle bit drill.
Apply only one coat of Glitsa Gold Seal Stain at 600 – 1,000 sq. ft. per gallon.
Apply stain to a 2’ – 3’ wide strip of the bare wood with a clean, soft, absorbent cloth or brush, following the grain of the wood from wall-to-wall. Wipe up all excess stain with a clean cloth. Replace cloths as they become wet with stain. Floors must be wiped clean so that no lap marks show. Excess stain left on the surface could interfere with adhesion of the seal coat. Continue in 2’ – 3’ wide strips from wall-to-wall until the entire floor is completed.
When completed, keep track of all stain rags and remove from premises. To avoid spontaneous combustion, place in water filled metal container. Keep lid closed and properly dispose in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Allow Gold Seal Stains to dry at least 24 hours, or until thoroughly dry. Heavily pigmented stains (see list below) require at least 48 – 72 hours dry time. Low temperatures, high humidity, or poor ventilation can slow the dry of Gold Seal Stains.
Once dry, apply a Glitsa seal coat. Refer to the applicable sealer directions for proper application and dry times. Improper application or lack of dry time could cause wrinkling in Glitsa finishes.
Do not burnish the floor. Do not use steel wool on white or pastel floors because the steel wool can leave black marks on the stain. Steel wool may cause rust if used with waterborne finishes.
Tip for more uniform, intense color:
To achieve a more uniform, intense color, opening or popping the wood grain may be necessary. After vacuuming, wipe the floor with a clean cloth or sponge dampened (not soaked) with warm water. Follow immediately by wiping floor with a clean, dry cloth to ensure uniformity and eliminate possible puddling.
Allow floor to thoroughly dry overnight before proceeding. Be sure to maintain proper heat and ventilation. Do not apply stain until all moisture is gone. Use moisture meter to test before and after popping the grain to verify original moisture content. Do not screen or disc sand floor after opening the grain, as this will close the wood grain and prevent uniform absorption of the stain.
Pigmented Gold Seal Stains requiring 48 – 72 hours of dry time:
