Systems

  • 1 Glitsa Sealer or Bacca and 1 Gold Seal for a traditional, natural Swedish look that shows grain definition.
  • 2 Glitsa Sealer or Bacca and 1 Gold Seal for a higher build look.
  • 1 or 2 coats MultiKote and 1 Gold Seal for a high build system that has sheen before the topcoat.

Application Instructions

Allow Bacca or Glitsa Sealer to dry thoroughly (follow label instructions for seal coat) before applying Gold Seal. When dry, the seal coat should be lightly sanded with a well-used screen, 100 grit or finer. Note: Using new screens between coats will result in scratches showing through the final finish. If the screen seems to load up from sanding, allow additional time to dry before continuing. Vacuum thoroughly. If tacking is required, use alcohol, lacquer thinner or water only, on a clean cloth. (Do not use paint thinner or commercially prepared tack rags.) Have adequate ventilation while tacking. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.

Prior to application, turn off all pilot lights, heaters, air conditioners, and all other ignition sources. Since vapors may travel, prevent build up by ventilating areas of the job not being treated.

Gold Seal should be stirred well in the can before pouring into a clean plastic container. For best results, room temperature should be between 60° – 70° F during application. Wear a NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator to protect from organic vapors and formaldehyde when applying Gold Seal.

During winter months, warm temperature must be achieved then shut off heat. During application, it is important to provide adequate ventilation while preventing air movement (windows, doors and refrigerator exhausts) directly across the surface of the Gold Seal finish, as this will cause the coating to dry too quickly causing brushmarks and lack of flow. Provide indirect ventilation during application to achieve adequate air exchanges.

Avoid direct sunlight on the area being coated by covering windows where necessary. Hot sun will heat the wood and make the Gold Seal finish dry too fast to allow full flow or could cause bubbles in the finish.

Gold Seal should be applied freely with a Glitsa brush, or a lambswool applicator (new lambswool applicators may leave lint in finish). Gold Seal covers 350-400 sq. ft. per gallon. Follow the grain of the wood from wall-to-wall, being sure not to work or brush the material too much or apply too thinly, which could cause the Gold Seal to set up too quickly and not allow full flow. In hot, dry climates, Glitsa Retarder may be added to Gold Seal to lengthen open time and aid flow. Follow instructions on Retarder label. Note: Excess retarder will reduce the solid content of Gold Seal and lengthen dry time. Wrinkling of the final coat may result if any or all previous applications are not thoroughly dry, or if screened too deeply.

Once finish is dry to the touch (approximately four hours, depending on weather conditions), immediately open doors and windows to ventilate area, which will also aid the curing of the finish. Allow 24 hours to dry before allowing light traffic on floors.

An additional coat of Gold Seal should not be applied for 90 days, as wrinkling could occur. If a second Gold Seal coat is desired before the initial 90-day curing period, wait one week, then apply a coat of Glitsa Sealer or Bacca and then another coat of Gold Seal or one coat of Lite Scent may be used in place of the seal coat and Gold Seal. Lite Scent can be applied 24 hours after the initial application of Gold Seal.

Recoat: When the Gold Seal finish begins to show wear, or if the recommended cleaning procedure fails to clean the floor, recoating may be necessary. Minor repairs may be made with Gold Seal Aerosol.

To prepare the floor for recoat, tack with a high grade lacquer thinner. Hand sand or screen floors with fine grit sandpaper or a used screen. Carefully vacuum up all dust, then follow instructions for application. Note: Adding Fusion bonding additive to Glitsa Gold Seal may help alleviate any possible adhesion issues in questionable recoats. Floors contaminated with waxes or oils should be resanded.

Clean brushes immediately after applying finish. Wash brushes twice in a high grade of lacquer thinner only. Soak brush in clean, fresh, lacquer thinner overnight, then dry thoroughly before using.

Use floors with care for the first 2-3 weeks after application. Do not cover or use water on floors during this first 2-3 week period.
