So, you forgot to add the Hardener to your Conversion Varnish.. Now what?

Has this ever happened to you?

• You check on a floor you finished and it seems surprisingly tacky for the amount of time that has passed. You can’t quite remember if you added hardener or not.
• You’ve finished a job and the homeowner calls you asking why the floor is still tacky.
• You finish coating and see an unopened hardener bottle in your set up area.
• You catalyzed a part of your container and are not sure if you put in enough hardener.

One or all of these scenarios has probably happened to many of you. Luckily, in most cases, there are options to help you get to the finish line.

So, now what?

If you are sure you added the correct amount of hardener to the coating, then it is time to investigate what jobsite environmental factors may be causing the prolonged dry time.
If after investigating you find that you didn’t add the hardener or the correct amount of hardener…

Here are some steps you can take to complete the job.

• If you forgot the hardener completely or partially and the floor stays very tacky:
  • Wait a few days to see if it will dry enough to walk on without leaving footprint.
  • Vacuum and hot coat with a new coat of finish that has 10% additional hardener mixed into it.
  • After the coat has thoroughly dried, you will be at the point where you may resand if needed or move forward to complete the job.
  • If an additional coat is needed to complete the job, we recommend applying a coat of MultiKote, Platinum Plus or Lite Scent conversion varnish.

As always, environmental conditions can affect time frames. Air exchange is productive, but putting fans across the floor is not recommended. Putting fans in the doorways or windows, moving air out of the house will help air exchange and drying.
